Somatic Experiencing® (“SE”) is a body-centered psychotherapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine to address and heal the effects of trauma and stress.
Book AppointmentDr. Peter Levine shares that, in a session with a client who was experiencing severe panic attacks and debilitating symptoms, an image came to his mind of a tiger pouncing. He told the client to run because there’s a tiger, and the client started to imagine, move and feel the impulse of her own body to get away. The client was able to engage with this process intuitively. Through the visualization and the sensation, they were able to access and release the client’s stored “flight” response that had been blocked and held in her body for so many years. After that session, both Peter and the client recognized a significant shift in her struggles and reduction in her symptoms.
From there, and with his 50+ years of working in the field of trauma, Dr. Peter developed Somatic Experiencing® as a way to transform and release the stuck survival responses (Fight, Flight, Freeze) that cause many emotional, mental, psychological and physiological ailments.
Somatic Experiencing® (aka "SE") uses the skills of mindfulness in a specific way to allow the physiology of the survival response to be accessed, shifted and released in a safe and titrated way. A primary aspect of SE is tracking sensation, impulse for movement, and using visualization to allow the body to do in the here and now, what it couldn’t do in the past. By completing stress and trauma responses, the physiology is able to reset and come back into it’s zone of optimal resilience – the rest digest state in which the body heals, rejuvenates and the person is able to respond and engage with life.
Somatic Experiencing® was primarily used for shock trauma. However, as the stress and trauma responses became better understood, Somatic Experiencing has been found to help with many physical, emotional and psychological ailments including:

Somatic Experiencing is a mindfulness-based therapeutic technique that focuses on helping recover the body’s capacity for emotion regulation and overall resilience. It involves slowing down in order to allow the body to lead the session and complete trauma responses to bring the physiology back into the balanced state of rest-digest. Somatic Exercise is a broad term used today by different people to describe movement-based therapies that focus on shifting the overall experience of the body-mind.
Yes. SE often complements other therapeutic modalities like EMDR, Brainspotting, and IFS. It can be integrated to help better guide other techniques while keeping in mind the client’s overall emotion regulation and resilience, or it can be used as a standalone approach depending on the therapist's training and client needs.
A typical SE session may involve minimal talking about the trauma. Instead, the therapist guides the client to slow down and notice body sensations, images, movements, and impulses. Sessions are paced gently to avoid retraumatization.
While it’s especially effective for trauma and PTSD, SE is also helpful for chronic stress, anxiety, physical pain, attachment issues, and emotional dysregulation. It can improve resilience and support overall nervous system health.
SE emphasizes bodily awareness and nervous system regulation over cognitive analysis. While talk therapy may focus on discussing memories and feelings, SE prioritizes tuning into physical sensations and subtle bodily cues to resolve trauma at a physiological level.
