Psychodrama is a kind of group psychotherapy developed that creates a setting for interaction and transformation using guided acting tips and role-playing to help participants explore and gain greater insight into their lives, emotions, aspirations, and relationships.
Book AppointmentPsychodrama was developed by Romanian psychiatrist and therapist Dr. Jacob Moreno in the early 20th century, inspired by his own experience in theatre and performance. Dr. Moreno was deeply interested in the power of imaginative expression and the creative process unfolding within a dedicated space that holds the intention of healing. He applied drama and theatre therapeutically as a means for clients – called protagonists - to discover insights about themselves by exploring different performative scenarios that can allow shifts and variations in outcomes to be experienced and internalized. Moreno’s method combines elements of psychology, theater, and social interaction in order to facilitate emotional expression, personal growth, and healing.
Psychodrama creates the opportunity to externalize our experience, explore new perspectives and find more resilience with different issues.
Samar is our Psychodrama therapist and group therapy facilitator. Samar first discovered the power of psychodrama when she and her colleagues were going through the training together and a traumatizing incident happened in a nearby community, allowing them the opportunity to immediately experience the method personally. Samar was in awe of the direct and transformative power of psychodrama to engage with people in a very real and interactive way, individually and collectively. Helping people and communities creatively address their goals and challenges through psychodrama is one of her greatest passions.
Yes. Psychodrama is very effective for team building, whether for work dynamics and the corporate sector or community dynamics and the charity sector. Please contact us to discuss providing a psychodrama program catered to supporting the goals for your team.
There are different structures for the psychodrama programs. If it is a closed-group structure with a specific number of days, then it will be important to commit to the whole program to honour the integrity of the group process. If it is an open-group structure, there is no obligation to commit to more than one session.
A psychodrama session starts with some ice-breakers where the facilitator helps the group feel more at ease with each other and ready to engage with the creative process. This involves the use of warm up exercises that help relax the body and the voice, as well as raise the awareness of personal and interpersonal space.
Psychodrama is a creative therapy process. You can choose to participate in as many programs as you wish. Each psychodrama program will be clear about the topic or theme it will be focusing on and the structure (e.g. how many sessions, open or closed group, etc.). We will be sharing more information on each program to allow time for people to sign up.
Because psychodrama can be provided in different structures, it can be set up for a specific group that is a closed group or it can be offered in a format of an open group with different participants each time.
